Prikazane statistike so me prepričale – v Kataloniji so mediji, ki imajo različne javnosti in tem želijo ugajati.

Zato vas prosim, da zaprete peticijo in nas rešite takšnih čustvenih in slabo opravljenih razprav.

ENGLISH translation of the speech of Ivo Vajgl on the session of the PETI committee today in the EP:

Ivo VAJGL: “I have been a journalist for several years and this is a proxy debate we are attending today. Everybody knows that there is a political problem between Catalonia and Spain. I wish that this issue could be resolved in a diplomatic and political way. This kind of proxy debate about press is a typical debate, which brings us away from the point.

Regarding neutrality and plurality, I would like to state as a former journalist: there is no neutral journalism if it is good. Good journalism is never neutral but the media have to be pluralistic and democratic.

Not everybody thinks the same if he is sitting in editorial of any media and I have been persuaded by statistics – in Catalonia there are obviously media that have certain public and other media that have a different public and they try to please that public. If Catalans are saying that they are neglected and ignored in Spanish speaking media, is this equally or even more worrying phenomena than if Catalan media are reporting on predominantly Catalan problems.

I am coming from a multinational country. We have for sixty or more years, even in Yugoslavia, that was a communist country, television that was in Italian language – Radio and TV Capodistria – and nobody ever tried to involve this media in political or ideological debate in Slovenia or in Yugoslavia. There are Slovenian media in Austria which are also independent and nobody is interfering in what they are reporting. I really think that this kind of debate with such a nice Mediterranean temperament doesn’t solve any serious problems – neither in Catalonia or in Spain. It should not take place in this forum or in the European Parliament. If every nation and every country of united Europe would use this forum in order to litigate and complain about their countryman, it would be end. I understood that the will of Commission is not to keep open this petition. So please I am asking you to close this petition and save us of this kind of emotional and ill-faithed debates.”
